WIS

The World Meteorological Congress in 2003 (Cg XIV) formally adopted the concept of a WMO Information System (WIS) for Managing and Moving Weather, Water and Climate Information in the 21st Century.

WIS incorporates the connectivity of the GTS and the flexibility of new systems such as the Internet, whilst ensuring that a data management framework is able to encompass all WMO information. There is, however a shift of emphasis with the introduction of WIS: from managing communication links to managing data and products. To this end, NetSys in close co-operation with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) is researching and developing procedures and methodologies applicable to Data Collection or Production Centres (DCPCs) and also those for National Centres (NCs).
